The hand-and-a-half sword – Oakeshott Type XVII

One of my long-term favourites as a swordsmith is the Oakeshott Type XVII. This is an elegant type of hand-and-a-half sword. It is as handy with one hand or two, with a long blade for good reach.

Even in blunt form with a wide tip for reenactment combat, it is possible to make it light and fast, by hollow grinding the edges to keep the weight of the blade down. This way, the pommel can also be kept light.

The secret of any sword is to make it only as heavy as it needs to be in order to be strong and balanced enough to do its job, and no heavier.

You can see several of these in my new gallery:

    1. Sorry but that was a commissioned piece, I don’t have anything in stock and unfortunately I am not taking orders for the forseeable future.

I hope this will change. This type is exceptionally rare, and VERY underappreciated. Please let us know if the situation changes.
